More than 100 Cuban medical professionals have arrived in Honduras in recent days to help revitalize the health system. This is to support the revitalization of the medical system. The health system was taken over in crisis by President Xiomara Castro's government after years of underinvestment in this vital sector.
The group is made up of experts such as cardiologists, immunologists, surgeons and anesthesiologists, and Honduran authorities believe it will help reduce the waiting times for surgeries that many Central Americans suffer today. It is said that this will be possible, and will particularly benefit the people. .
The Cuban doctors, who will be working at the public hospitals Escuela Hospital and Catalino Rivas Hospital in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, received a warm welcome from many Hondurans at Palmerola Airport.
The arrival of medical experts on the territory of Honduras took place in accordance with a medical cooperation agreement signed earlier this month between Havana and Tegucigalpa.
The agreement, signed for a two-year period, will also allow Honduran doctors to specialize on the Caribbean island.
The citizens of this Central American country have already benefited on other occasions from the care of medical workers from the Cuban territory. The first hurricane arrived after Hurricane Mitch's devastating passage through the area in 1998, causing numerous deaths and millions of dollars in economic losses.
They historically provided assistance in remote and hard-to-reach areas where there were few or no health workers. Since then, they have performed millions of consultations and thousands of surgeries. Also in 2020, Cuban brigades assisted victims of Tropical Storms Eta and Iota. The recognition of people and authorities was great. Congress also awarded them the Commander's Cross of Honor.
Cuban medical professionals have left their mark in different latitudes. They have brought a high level of training, dedication, and humanism to the service of those most in need, no matter the adverse conditions. And now, in Honduras, they continue to make history and are committed to providing assistance to everyone, especially the most vulnerable sectors. They will continue to provide peace of mind and save lives.
